I have been excited for Thor Ragnarok ever since Taika Waititi was announced as the director of the film and I finally got the chance to see it and I loved it!!
This is by far the best of the Thor films and is the funniest Marvel movie (at least in my opinion). Thor Ragnarok revolves around Thor (Chris Hemsworth) who is exiled from Asgard after Hela (Cate Blanchett), the goddess of death, comes to conquer Asgard. Thor recruits help from his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and from the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to stop this villain from taking over his homeland.
Every main character in this movie gets their chance to shine. It is so refreshing to see a new side of Thor who has a newfound, awesome sense of humor. The Hulk is totally awesome too as is his counterpart Bruce Banner (every scene with him was really fun). Tom Hiddleston returns and delivers the Loki we all know and love. Valkyrie is a welcome newcomer and total badass. The Grand Master (Jeff Goldblum) is basically…Jeff Goldblum and he is hilarious. Heimdall (Idris Elba) returns and is given more to do than the past Thor films. But I think my favorite character out of the bunch is Korg, played by Taika Waititi himself, who is so funny and really cute. And of course Hela is intimating and scary which is a refresher because I never really felt that way about any of the past Marvel villains.
This movie is hilarious like I said. I think it’s funnier than the first Guardians of the Galaxy and it’s not a forced sense of humor that I got from the second Avengers film, it’s organic and unique. Honestly I strongly recommend seeing this movie as soon as you can especially in a big crowd because you get the chance to really enjoy yourself and share some laughs with the moviegoers around you.
As for negatives, I believe that the beginning of the film moves very quickly and is choppy. Once we arrive at the planet, Sakaar though, the pacing is pretty perfect. I also noticed, again in the beginning, that the CGI and green screen effects were not all that great. Even though I believe that Hela is one of the better Marvel villain’s, she still is generic in some ways and I wish we could have gotten some more depth with her.
And just so you guys know, the director – Taika Waititi has a unique sense of humor and I know that may not work for everybody. I tried to expose you guys to his sense of humor and directing style from his past films that I reviewed – What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople – but I am sure his humor will not work for everyone and that it may be jarring to see Thor, who before was depicted somewhat more seriously, suddenly has this newfound personality and funniness. The tone of Thor Ragnarok is a complete departure from the previous two Thor films so if you were to watch all three Thor films, this one would not fit the other two’s mold. Ragnarok feels more like a standalone Thor film that doesn’t depend on other Marvel movies except maybe Avengers: Age of Ultron.
But this was such a fun time at the movies, I enjoyed myself immensely, and I want to go see this film a bunch more times. I think (for me) Thor Ragnarok is in my top 5 Marvel movies. I give this film an A-
