Let’s just start out by saying this is one of the nerdiest movies I have ever seen.

Ready Player One is a film based off the novel with the same name, that takes place in the future and has a virtual reality called “The Oasis”. The story centers around Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) as he guides us through the Oasis as his avatar, Parzival, and tries to find the hidden tasks the games’ creator, James Halliday (Mark Rylance), left behind in his will that unlocks total control of the Oasis and all of his fortune.

Steven Spielberg has finally returned to the blockbuster and man is it nice to see him back. He does an excellent job here at creating the Oasis – a whole virtual universe filled to the brim with pop culture references. And like many others have said in their reviews, the Oasis is so compelling and rich that it leaves the real world stuff to feel more bland. And though the story is fun to watch the characters are kind of left in the dust, we don’t get much of a backstory or character depth.

All the performances here are pretty great. But the actors themselves don’t have too much to do because the majority of the film takes place in the Oasis. There’s also a romance between Parzival and Artemis that feels very rushed, forced, and kind of not needed. There’s also a ton of exposition in the beginning, that I think went on for too long before the story kicked in. The film overall was long, and while I didn’t necessarily notice it much, the exposition at the beginning and a drawn out third act might make the film drag for some people.

On the flip side of that, there are some really great sequences in here, one being a insane car chase near the beginning and one that takes place inside a movie. For me and I’m sure for many others, the draw to this film was all the pop culture references, that’s what all the fun’s about, but I can also see how some may think this movie is just a pop culture fest with no real meaning. But if you are even just a little bit of a geek, you will probably like this movie.

I give Ready Player One a B+
