This version of What We Do in the Shadows takes place in New York City and centers around a new group of characters. Kayvan Novak stars as Nandor with Harvey Guillén as his servant, Guillermo. They live with the vampire couple of Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) and Laszlo (Matt Berry) as they attempt to prepare for the arrival of a very old vampire coming to check on them to see if they have conquered Staten Island.

Well good news to one and all, the TV series stays true in tone and spirit to the 2014 film. It’s hilarious, inventive, and has quirky characters. With creators Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi returning to help with the series, the TV pilot was a huge hit at SXSW. It was a definite highlight for me at my time there.

The ensemble is great here and works just as well as the film’s ensemble. I have no doubt that I will love these characters, those it remains to be seen if any of them can reach the love I had for the film’s character of Petyr. Mark Proksch plays Colin Robinson who was a hilarious scene stealer in the pilot. Beanie Feldstein from Booksmart and Ladybird also appears, we only got a glimpse of her in the pilot, though it was promised that she will have a more prominent role as the season goes on.

In fact, the series promises both familiar and new kinds of vampire shenanigans. Mockumentaries work so well for television comedies and this is sure to be another hit for the genre. If you loved the film What We Do in the Shadows this is definitely for you, and hopefully this series can introduce more people to the cult favorite film.

I give the pilot an A.
