Jumanji: The Next Level follows Spencer (Alex Wolff), Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain), Martha (Morgan Turner), and Britney (Madison Iseman) during their winter break of their freshman year in college. Spencer, who is struggling more than his friends in college life, decides to go back into the Jumanji game to re-gain some confidence as Dr. Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson). However, the game glitches and Spencer’s grandfather (Danny DeVito) and his friend (Danny Glvoer) find themselves stuck in the game.
The newest Jumanji film is much like the previous film, it’s a fun watch with a thin plot. You go to see The Rock, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillian make jokes and survive the game.
The actors get to play different characters in the film so it is fun to watch them do that. The Rock plays Danny DeVito’s character, but for most of the film, he seems to be doing a confused old guy caricature rather than Danny DeVito. Kevin Hart plays Danny Glover’s character, which he does a better job at encapsulating than The Rock. He and Jack Black were the funniest characters in the film. Awkwafina also plays a new supporting character, but is a nice addition to the film.
But while there are funny moments, I didn’t find myself as invested in this adventure. They attempt to add more to the plot with Danny DeVito and Danny Glover’s characters, but I found their story to be pretty paint by numbers.
There is a post credit scene that promises another sequel that calls back to the original Jumanji movie with Robin Williams. I’d say that was probably the most exciting thing about this movie since it promises more creativity rather than sticking these characters in Jumanji again.
Overall, you will have a good time with Jumaji: The Next Level, but it is is more or less the same as the previous Jumanji film and kind of forgettable. I give the film a B-
