2020 is year and with it comes another promising year of films. I’m particularly excited since there are a great number of women-led films both in front of and behind the camera in 2020. Since it’s early in the year, none of the smaller, independent films are really known until the Sundance Film Festival later this month, so this list will mainly be bigger films. I will also do a Top 10 of 2019 list, but that won’t be up until I have seen 1917, which is a major awards contender this year.
So here is what I’m most looking forward to at the moment for the upcoming year with some honorable mentions that go out to Godzilla vs. Kong, Eternals, and Bob’s Burgers who didn’t quite make the list.
10. Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
I think that everyone can agree that Harley Quinn was one of the best parts of Suicide Squad, well now she gets her own movie that features some female superheroes as well. Ewan McGregor stars as the villain and this movie looks very weird from the other DC movies, so it’ll be interesting to see how much of the tone of the trailer matches the film itself.
9. Black Widow
I think this film is a little too late since Black Widow has since met her demise. This film takes place after Captain America: Civil War and doesn’t seem as gritty as I want it to be. However what gets me excited is the film’s supporting cast of David Harbor, Florence Pugh, and Rachel Weisz.
8. No Time to Die
I’m not a big James Bond fan, but this trailer looks very promising. Not only do we get a reunion of Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas from Knives Out, but Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge co-wrote the movie. That is enough to get me excited and hope that this film is better than Spectre.
My relationship with Disney live-action remakes has worsened over the years since I’m not really a big fan of any of them. This year’s Mulan may be a bit different though. The film looks not to be an exact duplicate of the animated Disney film (one of my favorites) because it has new characters and creatures. It seems to incorporate some supernatural elements which will hopefully change the story up a bit.
Soul is an upcoming Pixar film and there’s not one Pixar film that is bad. This film looks better than the other upcoming Pixar film, Onward. And it promises an original story and the trailer does not reveal too much.
I know Dune is a sci-fi novel and has already had a movie, but this upcoming remake is directed by the brilliant Denis Villeneuve. I have not seen the previous film or read the novel, so I do not really know the story. However it stars Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. It’s looking to be another high concept, cult classic like Blade Runner 2049 was.
4. Promising Young Woman
This trailer took Twitter by storm the day it was released. It seems to be a pretty enticing revenge tale starring Carey Mulligan that is fitting of the Me Too era right now. It also has a star-studded supporting cast of Allison Brie, Laverne Cox, Bo Burnham, and Connie Britton among others.
I don’t know how Christopher Nolan comes up with these ideas. And even though the trailer is out, I’m not really sure what this film is about. But the film stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Elizabeth Debicki, all actors gaining more spotlight and recognition. And since I’ve enjoyed all of Nolan’s films, I’m sure this one will be no different.
2. Wonder Woman 1984
Wonder Woman was one of my favorite films of 2017. And the original team of Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot, and Chris Pine are returning. With new characters starring Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig, and the fact that this film takes place in the 80s, seems to promise a fun time at the theaters.
1. In the Heights
I was lucky enough to see the musical, In the Heights, and will once again bow down to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s genius. The film is huge for Latinx representation and I hope this story will resonate as much as Hamilton has. The music is great, the story is touching, and the film looks to be a grand spectacle.
