The Good Place Season 1 (NBC)

The Good Place is a delightful TV that surrounds the character Eleanor (Kristen Bell) who dies and goes to “The Good Place,” which is basically heaven. But once she is shown around and praised for her life on Earth by the architect Michael (Ted Danson), an angel of sorts, she realizes that they have the wrong person and she doesn’t belong there, but does the best to become a good person with the help of Chidi (William Jackson Harper), her friend and apparent soulmate, in order to remain in the Good Place.

The Good Place is yet another charming show with great performances by Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, and the rest of the cast. It’s pretty inventive as well for being a sitcom.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 1 (Amazon Prime)

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a TV series on Amazon about an everyday all-American housewife in the late 50s who does everything for her husband. But once her seemingly perfect life is turned upside down, she finds a new outlet to express herself – standup comedy.

Rachel Brosnahan gives an outstanding performance as Miriam Maisel – a confident, hilarious, and highly fashionable woman. She by far is the best part of the show. I really love her chemistry with Susie (Alex Borstein), another woman not afraid to speak her mind and who becomes Miriam’s manager. By far the least interesting character is Joel (Michael Zegen), Miriam’s husband, who is bland and makes poor decisions.

The Punisher Season 1 (Netflix)

The Punisher is the latest Marvel series to drop on Netflix. It stars Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle aka the Punisher, Ebon-Moss Bachrach as Micro, Ben Barnes as Billy Russo, Amber Rose Revah as Dinah Madani, and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page (from Daredevil).

The Punisher takes place after Daredevil season 2 and maybe after Defenders (but the show wasn’t really clear on that, where Frank Castle is trying to keep a low profile. Then, he catches wind that someone else may be responsible for his family’s death. This leads him back on the path of vengeance and he is forced to team up with Micro so that they can both get what they want.

Stranger Things Season 2 (Netflix – 2017)

As we all know, Stranger Things was Netflix’s big hit last year – it was one of the most talked about shows of the summer. And while I was a fan of season 1 and enjoyed it a lot, I didn’t get all the hype and thought that people overrated it. I heard complaints about how season 2 needs to come faster, when is season 2 coming out, blah blah blah – that kind of stuff and I just remember thinking “Um you do know TV shows need to take time right?” And I am so glad that they took their time with season 2 because it is so good and  even better than season 1.

I just have to start out by saying I am very impressed by Noah Schnapp who plays Will Byers. He wasn’t a big part of the last season, since well he was missing the whole time. But here he really got to play and I’m telling you he delivered every time – actually he was my favorite part of this season and I didn’t think anyone could top Eleven in the show. His character had me worried, frightened, and sympathetic all at the same time. He was the emotional crux of the whole show. Of course everyone else’s acting was exemplary as well. I’m really surprised at how the show was able to expand its mythology and universe, increase the stakes, and create realistic and compelling character arcs which made season 2 a better story.

Mindhunter Season 1 (Netflix)

David Fincher’s Netflix series, Mindhunter, revolves around two FBI agents, Agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff, of Hamilton fame) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), along with psychology professor, Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), who start a program that studies the psychology of serial killers. The most compelling part of the show, which should come at no surprise, is when these Agents sit down with murderers and question them on their state of mind during the killings. Serial killer Ed Kemper, played brilliantly by Cameron Britton, always leaves a chilling presence especially in the way he talks about women.

With this series we get to see how the stories from these killers affect our two main characters. It’s certainly no easy thing to come home and try to act normal when you just heard in excruciating detail about how someone killed multiple women. And because it is Fincher, the series is a slow burn, but it also doesn’t have any stakes, which is unlike him – there is no grand climax or plot twist at any point in the story – it simply shows the psychology of all of its characters, the most interesting being Holden’s transition of being a eager, goody two shoes to being a crass, asshole who no longer cares about what he says or does.
