Alien (1979)

Alien revolves around a group in space as they are unexpectedly waken up early on their journey back to Earth. They land on an unknown planet due to a transmission signal and they go out and discover alien eggs when one ends up infiltrating their ship.

I have never seen any of the Alien films. So watching the ’79 film was an experience and I now know why it’s so iconic. It scared the hell out of me with the suspense and was also pretty gross at parts. My biggest takeaway from the film: everyone on the ship is dumb and should have listened to Ripley.

Hereditary (2018)

Photo from Variety

Hereditary surrounds a family who is suffering from a tragedy with Annie’s (Toni Collette) death of her mother. Ever since her death, weirder things have been happening, making it seem something more sinister is at play.

I remember seeing the trailer for Hereditary in the theaters and I decided right away not to see the film in theaters. I don’t get scared easily with horror films, but this film surprised me right from the get-go because it flipped horror tropes on their head. It plays more like a family drama who are falling farther and farther apart and filled with psychological horror.

Haunting of Hill House (Netflix)

Halloween is over, but if you’re still in the Halloween spirit or are a fan of spooky shows, this is a great show to watch.

The Haunting of  Hill House surrounds the Crain family as their traumas as children living in a haunted house comes back to haunt them after a family tragedy occurs. Now the Crain’s must grapple on whether to let this tragedy divide them or bring them together.

This ensemble works magnificently well. Both the Crain family as kids and as adults have great chemistry. Each character has their own episode and it’s really cool to see how each person in this family experienced the Hill House and what affect that has on them as adults. Victoria Pedretti and Oliver Jackson-Cohen stood out as Nell and Luke. Carla Gugino was another highlight as the unhinged mother, but really as said before all the cast works great.

Halloween (2018)

Photo from IMDB

Halloween is the direct sequel to Halloween (1978) and revolves around Laurie Strode (Jaime Lee Curtis) as she prepares herself for the return of Michael Myers after 40 years.

Director David Gordon Green does a worthy sequel to the original Halloween, especially in regards to Laurie, whose paranoia has skyrocketed since her first encounter with Michael. The third act where Laurie and Michael confront each other again was done really well and the movie had a ton of homages to the original film.

Stranger Things Season 2 (Netflix – 2017)

As we all know, Stranger Things was Netflix’s big hit last year – it was one of the most talked about shows of the summer. And while I was a fan of season 1 and enjoyed it a lot, I didn’t get all the hype and thought that people overrated it. I heard complaints about how season 2 needs to come faster, when is season 2 coming out, blah blah blah – that kind of stuff and I just remember thinking “Um you do know TV shows need to take time right?” And I am so glad that they took their time with season 2 because it is so good and  even better than season 1.

I just have to start out by saying I am very impressed by Noah Schnapp who plays Will Byers. He wasn’t a big part of the last season, since well he was missing the whole time. But here he really got to play and I’m telling you he delivered every time – actually he was my favorite part of this season and I didn’t think anyone could top Eleven in the show. His character had me worried, frightened, and sympathetic all at the same time. He was the emotional crux of the whole show. Of course everyone else’s acting was exemplary as well. I’m really surprised at how the show was able to expand its mythology and universe, increase the stakes, and create realistic and compelling character arcs which made season 2 a better story.
